Ruthenium(III) chloride CAS 10049-08-8
Ruthenium trichloride, also known as ruthenium chloride. The chemical formula is RuCl3. Molecular weight 207.43. There are two variants: alpha and beta. Alpha type: Black solid, insoluble in water and ethanol. Beta type: brown solid, specific gravity 3.11, decomposes above 500 ℃, insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol. Prepared by reacting a 3:1 mixture of chlorine and carbon monoxide with sponge ruthenium at 330 ℃. The β - type transforms into the α - type when heated to 700 ℃ in chlorine gas, and the temperature at which the α - type transforms into the β - type is 450 ℃.

Ruthenium (III) chloride is used as a spectral purity reagent. Ruthenium (III) chloride is used as a catalyst for the oxidative cyclization of 1,7-dienes to generate oxacycloheptanediol. Ruthenium (III) chloride hydroxylates the tertiary carbon hydrogen bonds of cyclic ethers using periodate or bromate salts.
