Thymolphthalein‘s scientific name is “3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-2-methylphenyl)-phthalide”, which is an organic reagent. The chemical formula is C28H30O4, and the molecular weight is 430.54. It is a white crystalline powder. It is easily soluble in ether, acetone, sulfuric acid and alkaline solutions, and insoluble in water. It is often used as an acid-base indicator, and its pH color change range is 9.4-10.6, and the color changes from colorless to blue. When used, it is often prepared into a 0.1% 90% ethanol solution. It is also often prepared with other indicators to form a gentle combined indicator to make its color change range narrower and the observation clearer.

Thymolphthalein is often used as an acid-base indicator, with a pH color change range of 9.4 to 10.6, and a color change from colorless to blue. When used, it is often prepared as a 0.1% 90% ethanol solution, and is often mixed with other indicators to form a mixed indicator to make its color change range narrower and clearer to observe. For example, an indicator made by mixing a 0.1% ethanol solution of this reagent with a 0.1% ethanol solution of phenolphthalein is colorless in an acidic solution, purple in an alkaline solution, and rose at pH 9.9 (color change point), which is very easy to observe.
