What are the functions of sodium hyaluronate with different molecular weight ranges?

Hyaluronic acid is a large molecular polysaccharide extracted from bovine vitreous humor by Columbia University ophthalmology professors Meyer and Palmer in 1934. Its aqueous solution is transparent and glassy. Later, it was discovered that hyaluronic acid is one of the main components of the human extracellular matrix and intercellular matrix, as well as a filler between cells, playing an important role in the morphology, structure, and function of the skin. The aging, wrinkles, and sagging of the human body are closely related to the decrease in hyaluronic acid content in the skin.

Structurally speaking, hyaluronic acid is the condensation of two glucose derivatives, and by repeatedly repeating this structure, it becomes hyaluronic acid. This is also very similar to the structure of most polysaccharides, so sodium hyaluronate has the same function as most polysaccharides – moisturizing.

But hyaluronic acid is not stable. Generally speaking, hyaluronic acid exists in its sodium salt form. According to different molecular weights, hyaluronic acid can be divided into high molecular weight, medium molecular weight, low molecular weight, and oligomeric hyaluronic acid. Specifically, each manufacturer has a similar classification of the molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate. UNILONG is a professional manufacturer of sodium hyaluronate, including cosmetic grade, food grade, pharmaceutical grade sodium hyaluronate and some sodium hyaluronate derivatives. UNILONG classifies sodium hyaluronate as follows:

Sodium hyaluronate CAS 9067-32-7-application-2

◆High molecular weight hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid has a molecular weight higher than 1500KDa, which can form a breathable film on the surface of the skin, lock in moisture on the skin surface, prevent moisture evaporation, and provide long-term moisturization. But it has poor penetration and will not be absorbed by the skin.

◆ Medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid has a molecular weight between 800KDa and 1500KDa and can also form a breathable film on the surface of the skin, locking in moisture and tightening the skin.

◆Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid has a molecular weight between 10KDa and 800KDa and can penetrate into the dermis layer of the skin. It plays a role inside the skin, locking in moisture, promoting skin metabolism, and making the skin moist, smooth, delicate, soft, and elastic. The ability to prevent water evaporation is poor.

◆ Oligo hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid molecules with a molecular weight of less than 10KDa, i.e. less than 50 monosaccharide structures and a degree of polymerization of less than 25, can penetrate deep into the dermis layer and exert comprehensive and sustained moisturizing effects. Unlike ordinary hyaluronic acid molecules that exert moisturizing effects on the surface of the skin, they have a long moisturizing duration, good effects, long-term use, anti-aging, and wrinkle removal effects.

Some hyaluronic acids may undergo structural modifications (acetylation, etc.) in order to be more skin friendly. Ordinary hyaluronic acids are water-soluble, but their affinity for the skin is not good enough. After modification, they can adhere well to the skin.
