Benzoic acid and methanol are obtained by esterification. Cyclic methanol and benzoylformic acid were added to the reaction pot, and sulfuric acid was slowly added with stirring. After heating under reflux for 12 h, excess methanol was recovered. The esterified product was neutralized with dilute sodium carbonate solution, the oil layer was separated, and the aqueous layer was extracted with benzene. The extract was combined with the oil layer, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then distilled. First, the solvent benzene was recovered, and then the low boilers were evaporated under reduced pressure. Then the fractions were collected and taken as methyl benzoylformate.
