Diethyl phthalate is a colorless transparent oily liquid with a slight aromatic aroma. It is miscible with ethanol and ether, soluble in organic solvents such as acetone and benzene, and insoluble in water. It is an intermediate of rodenticides such as diphtheria, rodenticide, and chlorhexidine, and is also an important solvent. Diethyl phthalate can be obtained as a crude product by refluxing phthalic anhydride with ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst, and then distilled to obtain the product.
