Lactic acid butyl ester, also known as alpha hydroxypropionic acid butyl ester, is a derivative of lactic acid formed by the esterification of lactic acid and butanol produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates similar to sugar. It appears as a colorless and transparent liquid with a sweet cream and milk aroma, and is easily soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, and esters. When mixed with water, it undergoes partial hydrolysis, is non-toxic, and has good solubility

Butyl lactate is a high boiling point solvent used in natural resins, synthetic resins, fragrances, paints, printing inks, dry cleaning solutions, and adhesives.
