Benzoin is formed by the condensation of two molecules of benzaldehyde in a hot ethanol solution of potassium cyanide or sodium cyanide using benzoin. Insoluble in cold water, slightly soluble in hot water and ether, soluble in ethanol and concentrated acid to form benzoyl.
